What preschoolers actually need to learn

Ages 4 to 6 in Singapore (N2, K1, K2) · written for parents, by a parent

The short version. MOE's preschool framework asks far less than the tuition market implies. There is no addition or subtraction in it. There is no "K1 standard" — MOE sets one set of goals for the end of K2 and nothing year by year. And MOE itself warns parents against over-preparing children academically before Primary 1.

What is official, and what is not

The document is the Nurturing Early Learners (NEL) Framework, MOE, updated 2022. It is guidance, not a syllabus: there is no national preschool exam and no prescribed year-by-year scope. Preschool is not compulsory here.

Its learning goals are described as what children should know and be able to do upon completion of preschool at Kindergarten 2. So when you see "K1 maths objectives" advertised, that breakdown comes from a preschool operator or a publisher — not from MOE.

Numeracy: the actual goals

By the end of K2, the framework asks that a child can:

English: the actual goals

Four goals — listening, speaking, reading, and early writing. Concretely, by end of K2: knowing upper and lower case letters; producing some of the 44 letter sounds (the framework's own word is "some"); hearing syllables, rhymes, beginning and ending sounds; blending simple words; reading a few high-frequency words and word families (-at, -en, -it); and writing short sentences using invented or conventional spelling.

"Wot" for "what" is normal development at this stage, not a mistake to drill out. And on the old argument about letter names versus letter sounds — the framework asks for both, and the research has moved that way too. Most letter names contain their own sound.

The Primary 1 question every parent asks

Here is MOE, in its own words, on preparing for P1:

"A common pitfall parents may make is overly preparing their children academically, such as getting them to complete assessment books or attend academic enrichment or tuition classes"

Their stated reason: children who have already learnt the material can become bored and "lose their joy of learning". MOE also says P1 teachers are trained to support children arriving at different levels, and that P1 and P2 have no weighted assessments or exams.

The structural proof is in the syllabus itself. The first line of Primary 1 maths is "counting to tell the number of objects in a given set" — the same skill the preschool framework sets as a goal. P1 assumes nothing and teaches from the beginning.

What schools actually emphasise for the transition is much more practical: opening a water bottle and food containers, buying food at the canteen, packing their own bag, following two or three step instructions, and telling a teacher when they need help.

About screens, including this one

Singapore's Ministry of Health issued guidance in January 2025: for children 18 months to 6 years, less than one hour of screen use a day outside school, watch it together where you can, and "do not use screens just to occupy or distract your child". No screens at meals or in the hour before bed.

That guidance is why Little Lab is built the way it is, and why it is deliberately small.

Why there are no stars, timers or scores in Little Lab

The main StudyLab app, for Primary 1 to 6, has stars, streaks, a timed mode and a score chart. Those are fine for a nine-year-old. None of them is here, on purpose:

So a round is six turns, it ends by itself, and there is no "play again" button waiting to pull her back in. The reward is the bear being pleased and something silly happening.

How a wrong answer is handled

There is no "wrong". The first miss describes what she chose — "you picked four dots" — and the right answer starts to move. The second miss shows her, then hands it back so she performs the correct action herself. Every question ends with her doing it right.

That is not softness. In a trial with 240 preschoolers, feedback that described what the child did produced better accuracy than either "Great job!" or a plain sound.

What Little Lab covers, and what it deliberately does not

Counting a set, comparing which group has more, finding the missing part of a whole, matching letters, and matching capital letters to small ones. All of it playable with the sound off, because a four-year-old often cannot turn the sound on — and on an iPad the side mute switch silences web audio anyway.

It does not teach written sums, and it will not, because that is not what this age needs.
