When Your Child Freezes on a Question They Know

She does the question at the kitchen table on Tuesday. She does three more like it on Wednesday. On Friday it appears on a test paper and she looks at it, and nothing happens. Afterwards she says she does not know what went wrong. She just went blank.
It is one of the more upsetting things to watch, partly because there is nothing to fix in the maths. The maths is fine. Something is sitting between her and it.
What follows is what I have found useful, and the thing that helped most was realising that "freezing" is not one thing. Three quite different things look identical from the outside, and they need different responses.
Three things that look the same
1. The blank. Her head is genuinely full — of the clock, of the person next to her already turning the page, of what happens if she gets it wrong. There is only so much room in a working memory, and worry takes up space that would otherwise be holding the question. She is not being dramatic. She is out of room.
2. The stall. She has not started because she is waiting to be sure. She wants to see the whole route before she writes anything, and on a question that is one step harder than usual, the whole route is not visible from the start. So she sits, re-reading, waiting for a certainty that only arrives after the first line is written.
3. The lost thread. She did start. Somewhere in the middle she lost her place, and now she cannot tell which part she has already done, so she cannot pick it up again. This one usually leaves evidence — a crossed-out line, a number written twice.
You can usually tell which one it was by asking afterwards, in a calm moment, in a way that is not an investigation. "What was happening in your head when you got to that one?" A child will often answer that question quite precisely. She will not answer "why didn't you do it?", because that one only has a wrong answer.
What does not help
"Just calm down." "You know this." "You did it yesterday." All true, all completely useless in the moment, and each one adds a small extra weight — because now she also knows she is disappointing you.
More timed practice does not help either, if timing is what is causing it. There is a place for a timer and it is a narrow one, which I wrote about in timing your child on maths: when it helps and when it backfires. If the freezing started when the timing started, that is not a coincidence worth arguing with.
Five things that do
- Give her a first move that costs nothing. The rule at our table is: write down what the question tells you, before you decide anything. Numbers, units, what is being asked for. It is mechanical, it cannot be wrong, and it gets the pencil moving. Most stalls end the moment something is on the page.
- Make skipping an official rule, not a failure. Circle the question number, move on, come back. Say it out loud at home so it is a plan she already has rather than a decision she has to make while panicking. A child who has never been given permission to skip will sit on question four for eleven minutes.
- Practise starting, not finishing. Take ten questions and do only the first line of each. No answers. It sounds strange and it works, because the part she is stuck on is the beginning, and that is the part she never gets extra practice at.
- Rehearse the conditions occasionally, not the content. One whole page, one sitting, no talking, at the table rather than on the sofa. Once a week is plenty. The aim is that the shape of a test stops being unfamiliar — which is a different job from knowing more maths, and the one thing revision at the last minute cannot do. - Give the freeze a name and a plan. Agree the exact sequence, in her words, and practise saying it: pencil down, breathe out, read it again, write one thing I know. A rehearsed plan is much easier to reach for than a good idea, and the point is not that it works every time — the point is that going blank stops being a surprise.
The ten minutes after the paper comes home
This is the part that is entirely ours, and it probably matters more than any of the above.
A child who freezes is usually already afraid of the result. If the paper coming home reliably produces disappointment, then next time there is more to be afraid of, and the thing that causes the freezing gets bigger. That is the loop worth breaking, and it is broken at our end rather than hers.
Ask about the questions rather than the mark. Find one she got right that was hard and say so. Leave the corrections for another day — nothing useful is learned in the first ten minutes anyway. If she has already started saying she is bad at maths, that sentence deserves its own attention, and there is a piece on what it usually means and what to do about it.
Freezing is not carelessness
Worth separating, because the two get treated the same and should not be. A careless mistake is a slip in work that was attempted. Freezing is work that never got started. If the paper comes back with blanks rather than wrong answers, that is not a concentration problem and telling her to be more careful will not touch it. When it is bigger than maths
If it is happening across several subjects, if she is dreading school on Sunday evening, if it is showing up in sleep or in her stomach — that is no longer a question about maths practice, and no article should pretend otherwise. Her form teacher usually knows things about the classroom that we do not, and that conversation is a good first step. If you are worried about how she is in herself, speak to your doctor. There is no prize for handling it alone.
The short version
Freezing is not not knowing. Work out which of the three it is by asking her, kindly, afterwards. Give her a first move that cannot be wrong, permission to skip, practice at starting rather than finishing, and a plan she has rehearsed. Then be careful with the ten minutes after the paper comes home, because that is where the next freeze is decided.
