Word Problems: When the Sums Are Fine but the Story Is Not

A child sits down with a page of sums and gets nearly all of them right. The same child, given the same arithmetic wrapped in two sentences about apples or bus fares, stops dead. Nothing has changed about the numbers. Something has changed about the task.
Parents often read this as a maths problem and respond by drilling more arithmetic. That is the one response almost guaranteed not to help, because the arithmetic was never the part that was failing.
What a word problem actually asks a child to do
Doing a sum is one job. Doing a word problem is four, and only the last one is the sum:
- Read it and hold it. Understand the sentences, and keep the situation in mind while working.
- Work out what is being asked. Not what the numbers are — what the question actually wants at the end.
- Decide what to do with the numbers. This is the real difficulty, and it is a modelling decision, not a calculation.
- Do the arithmetic. The part they can already do.
A child who is fluent at step four and shaky at steps one to three looks, from the outside, like a child who is bad at maths. They are not. They are being asked to do three unfamiliar things and one familiar one, all at once, and the familiar one is the only one anyone has been practising.
The keyword trick, and why it lets them down
Somewhere along the way most children pick up a rule: altogether means add, left means subtract, each means multiply. It is appealing because it works often enough to feel like understanding.
Then it stops working. A problem says a child gave away some sweets and has fifteen left, and asks how many they started with — the word "left" is there, and the answer requires adding. A problem that mentions "each" needs division. Once the questions become two-step, keywords fall apart entirely, because the words describe the story rather than the operation.
The damage is not only the wrong answer. A child relying on keywords has learned that word problems are a guessing game with hidden signals, so when the signal misleads them, they conclude they are bad at it. What they are actually bad at is a method nobody should have given them.
The most useful question to ask
When a child is stuck, the instinct is to ask "what do you think you should do?" — which is the hardest question on the page and the one they are stuck on.
A better one, every time: "Tell me what is happening in this story."
No numbers, no operations, just the situation in their own words. Someone had some marbles. He gave some to his sister. Now he has fewer.
Two things come out of this. If they can retell it, they understood the reading and the difficulty is genuinely the modelling — which is a much narrower thing to help with. If they cannot retell it, the problem was never maths at all, and no amount of maths practice will touch it.
That distinction is worth more than any technique, because the two need completely different help.
Drawing it is not a beginner's crutch
Singapore primary maths teaches the bar model for a reason, and it is worth understanding why rather than treating it as a school formality to be outgrown.
Drawing a problem does two things at once. It moves the situation out of working memory and onto paper, which frees up the attention that was being spent on remembering. And it turns "which operation?" — an abstract question — into something visible: once the bars are drawn, whether you are finding a missing part or a missing whole is usually obvious just by looking.
Children often resist drawing because it feels slow, and because a child who is quick at arithmetic has learned that fast is good. It is worth saying plainly to them: the drawing is not for children who find it hard, it is what the problem is. The people who are best at this draw more, not less.
Two-step problems, and where they break
Most word-problem trouble in the middle primary years is not really about understanding one step. It is about surviving two.
The pattern is recognisable. The child works out the first part correctly, and then answers that instead of the actual question. They found how many the brother had, and stopped, when the question asked how many the two of them had together.
This is almost never carelessness. It is the intermediate answer arriving and feeling like completion — the relief of having produced a number. The fix is small and mechanical: before starting, get them to underline what the question is asking and write it at the top of the working. At the end, read that line again and check the answer against it.
It sounds trivial. It removes a large share of lost marks, and it removes them without any new maths at all.
Why timing them backfires here
Timed practice has a place, and that place is arithmetic facts, where the goal is genuinely to make recall automatic.
Word problems are the opposite kind of task. They need the child to slow down, read twice, and hold a situation still while deciding what to do with it. Putting a clock on that teaches the exact habit that causes the errors: skim, grab the numbers, do something with them quickly.
If your child is anxious about time, work on the arithmetic separately until it is fast, so that word problems are not competing with it. That is what the maths practice is for — making the fourth step automatic, so the attention is available for the first three.
When it is a reading problem
Sometimes the honest answer is that the child cannot comfortably read the question. Word problems are written in a slightly formal register that appears almost nowhere else in a child's reading, and a child who reads fluently in a storybook can still stall on it.
Signs worth noticing: they get it once you read it aloud to them; they misread a single word and answer a different question; they can do the same problem when it is about something familiar and not when it is about something abstract.
If reading aloud consistently unlocks the problem, the help needed is reading help, not maths help. That is a good discovery, not a bad one — it means the effort can go where it will actually work.
What to do this week
- Ask them to retell the story before touching the numbers.
- Have them underline the question and write it at the top of the working.
- Ask them to draw it, and treat the drawing as the work rather than a preliminary.
- At the end, read the question again and check the answer answers it.
- Keep arithmetic practice separate, and keep the clock on that side of the line.
- If reading it aloud fixes it, work on the reading.
None of it is fast, and none of it needs a tutor. What it needs is the recognition that a child stuck on word problems is usually not stuck on maths — and being told they are bad at maths, when the trouble is somewhere else entirely, is the part that does lasting damage.
