School holidays: keeping maths ticking over without turning it into school

Every holiday there is a small argument in most households, and it is usually a version of the same one. One parent thinks the child should do a bit of maths so they do not forget everything. The child thinks the holidays are the holidays. Whoever is more tired wins, and then it is the night before school restarts and nothing has been done.

I have been on both sides of that argument. What I have settled on is that the parent worrying is right about the problem and wrong about the size of it.

What actually goes rusty

Understanding does not evaporate over a break. If your child genuinely understood what a fraction is in June, they will still understand it when they go back. That part is safe.

What fades is speed and fluency — the bits that had become automatic. Times tables get slower. The steps of long division need thinking about again instead of just happening. Where a sum took five seconds it now takes fifteen, and the child notices, and the noticing is the problem.

Because here is what it looks like from their side in the first week back. They sit down to work they could do before, and it feels harder. They do not think "I am out of practice." They think "I have forgotten how to do this," and for some children that slides quickly into "I am not good at maths any more." That is a much bigger thing to fix than a slow times table, and it is why a child deciding they are bad at maths is worth heading off rather than arguing with later.

So the case for holiday maths is not that they will lose knowledge. It is that a rusty first week can cost a child confidence they had already earned.

Ten minutes, most days, is genuinely enough

This is the part that surprises parents, and it goes the reassuring way.

The thing that keeps a skill fluent is frequency, not duration. Ten minutes on most days does more for automatic recall than an hour every Sunday. An hour on a Sunday mostly produces an hour of resistance and a child who now associates maths with losing their afternoon.

Ten minutes also survives a holiday. It fits before going out. It fits in a car. It does not need a table cleared or a parent sitting down beside them for a whole session. And crucially, a child will agree to ten minutes — they can see the end of it from the beginning, which is most of why it works.

If you get four or five days out of seven, that is a good week. Do not chase seven. Chasing seven is how it becomes a fight, and a fight costs more than a missed day.

Practise the automatic things, not the hard things

This is where good intentions usually go wrong. The instinct is to use the holidays to fix the weak topic — the one they struggled with all term. It feels efficient.

It rarely works, for two reasons. Teaching a difficult concept properly needs your full attention and theirs, and holidays are exactly when neither of you has it. And a child who finds a topic hard will resist it hardest when they feel they are owed a break, which turns ten minutes into forty minutes of negotiation.

Holidays are for maintenance, not repair. Practise the things that are supposed to be automatic:

If a weak topic genuinely needs work, do that as a separate thing, on a day you have chosen deliberately, when both of you are fresh — not folded into the daily ten minutes.

Where maths already is, without a worksheet

Some of the best holiday practice does not look like practice, and it counts.

Money is the strongest one. Let them pay and work out the change before the cashier does. Give them a budget at the supermarket and let them keep track. Working out whether the bigger packet is actually better value is real division and real comparison, and it has a genuine answer they care about.

Time. "We need to leave at 3:40 and it takes 25 minutes — when do we start getting ready?" Children find elapsed time surprisingly hard on paper and surprisingly easy when it decides whether they are late.

Cooking. Halving and doubling a recipe is fractions with a reason attached.

Journeys. Distances, arrival times, how many stops left, splitting a bill.

None of this replaces number facts — you cannot get times tables fluent from grocery shopping. But it keeps the machinery running on days when a sit-down session is not going to happen, and it quietly makes the point that maths is a thing adults use rather than a thing schools set.

Making it happen without nagging

Three things have made the difference here, and none of them are about motivation.

Attach it to something that already happens every day. Not a time — times slip. After breakfast, before screen time, in the car on the way somewhere. A habit hooked onto an existing habit survives a holiday; a habit that depends on someone remembering does not.

Let them see it end. A visible ten minutes, or a fixed number of questions, so the finish line is in view from the start. Open-ended is what they dread.

Let them pick something. Which topic, or which order, or whether today is the tables or the word problems. A small real choice removes most of the resistance, and it costs you nothing.

And if a day goes badly, stop. A bad ten minutes undoes several good ones, and there is no deadline here worth defending. Try again tomorrow.

The last few days before school

Two things are worth doing at the end of a break, and neither is cramming.

Move the sleep back before you move the maths back. A child who is short of sleep in the first week will look like a child who has forgotten everything, and you will diagnose the wrong problem. Shift bedtimes earlier a few days ahead.

Do one easy session that goes well. Deliberately below their level. The purpose is not practice, it is the feeling of getting things right immediately before going back. That single session does more for the first week than any amount of revision, precisely because it protects the thing that was actually at risk.

If nothing has been done at all

Which happens, and is fine.

Do not try to make it up. A crash week before school starts is unpleasant, ineffective, and ends the holiday on a bad note. Do two or three short easy sessions in the last few days, aimed at confidence rather than coverage, and let the first week back do the rest. Schools expect a rusty start; that is what the first week is for.

The children who come back fine are not the ones who did the most in the holidays. They are the ones who did a little often enough that nothing felt unfamiliar.
