A parent's overview of P1 to P6
If you've ever looked at your child's maths book and wondered what they're actually meant to know this year, this is the short version — one section per level, in plain English.
Age 6–7 · learning that numbers are made of other numbers
The year's real job is fluency with small numbers, and the idea that a whole splits into parts (number bonds). Everything later leans on this. If your child still counts on fingers for 7 + 3, that's the thing worth practising — not the next topic.
Age 7–8 · bigger numbers, and the start of multiplication
Regrouping ("carrying" and "borrowing") arrives here and trips up a lot of children — usually because place value isn't solid, not because they can't add. Multiplication starts as groups of, which is why 3 × 4 and 4 × 3 are taught as different pictures of the same answer.
Age 8–9 · the year the jump gets noticeable
Many parents notice the difficulty step here. Two-step word problems appear, remainders stop being tidy, and fractions begin properly. Weak times tables hurt most in P3 — division, fractions and later ratio all sit on top of them.
Age 9–10 · decimals and precision
Decimals and fractions are now two views of the same thing, and children are expected to move between them. Money problems become decimal problems. Careless place-value slips cost more marks than genuine misunderstanding at this level.
Age 10–11 · the PSLE groundwork year
Percentage, ratio and fractions are really one idea wearing three hats, and children who see that cope far better than those memorising three separate methods. Multi-step problems become the norm rather than the exception.
Age 11–12 · putting it all together
Little is genuinely new — most of P6 is combining earlier topics inside longer problems, plus a first taste of algebra. Discount and increase questions are just percentage with a story attached. Practising reading the problem matters as much as the arithmetic by now.
Speed — distance, time and speed — is deliberately absent. MOE removed it from the primary syllabus, so we don't practise it either. If you're using an older assessment book, you may still find it in there.
In our experience building this, it's rarely the arithmetic. It's the words. A child who can calculate 40 × 3 instantly can still be stuck on "one packet holds 40 sweets, Ali buys 3 packets" — because the hard part is turning the sentence into a sum. That's why there are word problems at every level, not just the upper ones.
